THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD
The seven wonders of the world (themata in Greek) was first put together by a man called Philo of Byzantium. He listed them in his research work titled "seven wonders of the world".
All the 7 wonders didn't exist anymore except the Great Pyramid of Giza which is still standing till this present day.
The 7 wonders of the ancient world are listed below alphabetically...
(1) COLOSSUS OF RHODES:
Colossus of Rhodes was one one of the ancient wonders of the world. It was a statue of the sun god Helios erected in the island of Rhodes by Chares of Lindos. It was to mark the victory against Dementrius who has sieged them for a year with a powerful army back in 280BC.
It was collected that the structure is 180ft also 33m high and this is approximately same height as the New York's statue of liberty. This structure was the tallest in the ancient world but collapsed during the 226BC earthquake and was not rebuilt but it remains were kept for remembrance.
(2) GREAT PYRAMID OF GIZA
This was and is still existing in a place called Giza in Egypt. It was believed to have been a tomb for the 4th dynasty pharaoh Khufu. His vizier Hemon was reported to be the brain behind the construction.
The pyramid is 137 metres tall presently but was said to be 146 metres upon completion of construction which took a time space of 20 years.
For close to 4 centuries, (3800 years) this pyramid remained the highest structure in the whole world.
(3) HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON:
The hanging garden in history is another wonder to talk about. The garden was architecturally designed and built by king Nebuchadnezzar II for his Queen Amytis who missed the view of green lands in her homeland. The garden was built with mud bricks with varieties of trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses which made it look more like a mountain. The name was derived from Greek word kremastos meaning overhanging. The site in the present day is currently somewhere near bilah in Iraq (uncertain) but whether or not this structure actually existed was unsure because key historical events never mentioned it and no found archeological evidence for it.
(4) LIGHTHOUSE OF ALEXANDRIA:
This tower was erected in Alexandria, Egypt between 305 to 317 BC after the death of Alexandria the great by Ptolemy I sota and completed by his son Ptolemy II philamansory with a cost of 800 talents of silver. It was said to have been built with stone and mansory. It covered a land area of 47km and was about 117m high. The fire was produced by a furnace above.
It was the third longest standing building but was brought down after three earthquakes till 1480 AD and it's remnants were used for another building.
(5) MAUSOLEUM:
An architectural design of the MAUSOLEUM
This came to being when mausolus took the decision to move to another capital which he chose Halicarnassus. He had to spend so much in commissioning temples, buildings and so on including the MAUSOLEUM to give himself a honourable burial. However, he couldn't complete it before his death in 353 BC. Therefore, His siblings carried on to finish the work and kept his ashes and that of his wife Artemisia with many dead animals at the steps of the entrance for sacrifice and stones were used to restrict
inward access.
(6) STATUE OF ZEUS:
Zeus was a Greek god in Greece. This statue was erected in the Zeus temple in Olympia.
According to description, it was 41 or 42 ft tall (that is 12.5m high). It was done by a sculptor Phidias as early as 435 BC.
It's made of ivory, gold and fine woods. But as at the 5th century, the structure had been lost and details about it were not easily obtained.
(7) TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS:
Replica of the temple rebuilt.
ARTEMIS TEMPLE sometimes called Diana temple located in Ephesus was built and rebuilt for at least 3 times, it was dedicated to the ancient local goddess. It has 129m length and 69m breadth.
The first version was destroyed by a serious flood in the 7th century and rebuilt in 550 BC to 540 BC (10 years). Then in 356 BC this rebuilt Artemis temple was burnt down by Herostratus with the intent of making history as the man who pulled down such world wonder.
The most astonishing rebuild of the temple funded by the Ephesians themselves was demolished again by the Christian group spearheaded by John Chrysostom.
Other wonders are:
(1) Terracotta army.
(2) The Great wall of China.
(3) Treasury of Petra.
